Captain Valorum by jstncloud Captain Valorum by jstncloud
Here is a custom Space Marine Captain I recently got to work on. I did not do the conversion he came to me this way but he was definitely a blast to paint.

I believe it was a custom chapter that the client came up with.

Thanks, I was skeptical about how it would turn out but I went for it and let the dice roll so to speak :)

Thanks, I wasn't too happy with the free handed words but I did the best I could, I've gotta practice :)

Ahh - I can JUST see the V and M on the banner - look quite crisp to me :)

Thanks :) I am considering using a calligraphy pen in the future to see how that does with free hand letters.

Graphics pens and such are good, but you need to find a varnish that doesn't make it run. And I find the ink fades if exposed to sunlight... But otherwise try it :)

The only possible criticism could be the bit blurry sword on the banner. But that is a  high level critique ;) I know how hard it is to write that small... but you quickly get better ;)

Thanks, I agree with you. The freehand there was very tough and I was lucky to even get the sword in there. Originally the client requested a sword and halo within that position but unfortunately I couldn't get that amount of detail packed into that small of a space (I have to get better! :) ).

I already struggle to get the chapter symbol and tactical markings on the plating... wow, that are some tough instructions!

I try to use really thin paints and many many layers... but that can be really time consuming. I imagine that a comission work requires a good balance of the time you spend.

Absolutely, that is the hardest thing I've had to weigh in in terms of commission work, time. When I first started I was spending too many hours on lower level projects and it was really hard to distance myself from detail I 'want' to do and what I am 'paid' to do. Those are usually very different topics.

Though sometimes I get a little excited and end up investing additional hours into fun projects at the clients' benefit lol.
